The Abu Simbel twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside in the 13th century BC during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II of the 19th Dynasty. They serve as a lasting monument to the king and his queen Nefertari. They were submerged under the water of Lake Nasser after the High
Dam was built, so UNESCO cooperated with the Egyptian government to move them onto an artificial hill.
This temple, known as the Temple of Ramses II, beloved by Amun, is dedicated to Ptah, Re-Her-Akhtey, Amun-Re, and to Ramses II himself. The small temple of Nefertari is called the Temple of Hathor.
